Below is a Course of Videos on evidence based teaching methods.©
They show how to teach even better by using very high performance teaching methods to teach a topic in pretty much any subject and level. Most methods work with on-line learning.
Short extracts from this course with some individual methods can be found here.
Crucial To Get Teaching Methods Right.
Teaching methods, techniques and strategies have more effect on achievement than pretty much any other factor teachers can change [Visible Learning: The Sequel. (Hattie, 2023)]. Let’s get them right! Common practice is often bad practice, but the best methods are more effective, and more fun for students and for teachers.

How To Get Methods Right
I’ve studied the most authoritative summaries of the vast amount of research on:
A: What expert teachers do
B: Classroom trials to measure the effectiveness of different teaching methods
C: The cognitive science of teaching
I’ve looked for agreements between these three schools of research. This is called ‘triangulation’. I’ve summarised agreements about the best teaching methods in my new book ‘How To Teach Even Better: an evidence based approach’ (Petty, 2018) OUP. This has a Foreword by Prof John Hattie, the global leader on evidence in education.
The videos below are based on my book, and show how to teach a topic in pretty much any subject using some of the best teaching methods available.
The Video Tutorial on Evidence-Based Teaching Methods
How to teach a topic in pretty much any subject using evidence-based, or ‘evidence-informed’ teaching methods. Ten twenty minute videos:

Video 1. Evidence-Based Teaching (in ENGLISH)
This webinar explains what an ‘evidence based teaching method’ is, and describes
‘Note Making’ as an example.
Video 2. Peer Explaining and Peer Tutoring
Peer explaining is a great way to require students to listen and make sense of teacher talk or
a demonstration. I also explain Study Buddies and Learning Teams, great ways to get
students to help each other outside class time. More detail on this in video 11.
Video 3. The Quality Learning Cycle
This video is about the nature of learning, and what this means for teachers. It describes
the new idea of co-constructivism where teacher and student both work to create, and
check and correct student understanding.
Video 4. How To Start a Topic
This describes some teaching methods with very high effectiveness that ready students to
learn a new topic.
Video 5. Making Questioning Inclusive
This video shows why conventional question and answer is very ineffective, and how we
can make sure every student is thinking when we ask the class a verbal question.
Assertive questioning and the use of mini-whiteboards
Video 6. Graphic Organisers and Other Active Methods
Mind maps and other graphic organisers have repeatedly been shown to be exceptionally
effective if used as described here. Also covers tasks that require reasoning, Case Studies,
and Academic Controversy.
Video 7. Find Faults and Fix
This covers methods that check and correct learning in the lesson. These methods are
exceptionally effective and help the weakest learners most. Includes how to give feedback to
maximise learning, Diagnostic Questions, Mastery Learning, and Peer Assessment.
Video 8. Showing How
This covers how to model or demonstrate skills and how to use examples of good practice
to show students how to do what they are about to try by themselves.
Video 9. Ladders of Tasks and Spaced Practice
This shows how to make sure the most able and least able students in your class can all
learn at their maximum rate (differentiation). Also, how to make sure they don’t forget
what you taught them last week or last term.
Video 10. Putting it All Together
This uses the content of the previous videos to show how to teach a whole topic.
Video 11. Study Buddies and Learning Teams
This shows how to get students to help each other outside of class contact time and follows
on from video 2.
There are very many more methods in my ‘How to Teach Even Better: and evidence-based
approach. This is a sequel to my ‘Evidence Based Teaching: a practical approach’. Also, for
those learning to teach my ‘Teaching Today’ looks at teaching methods in great detail.
