Yes indeed this comment is from personal experience as a teaching assistant for many years and now a trainee FE teacher.

By the use of a learning buddy, it raises the self esteem of the buddy and their confidence. Through giving students responsibility it raises their aspirations and motivation along with many other skills.

As the students collaborate, they build deeper connections with each other and with themselves which in turn can stretch and challenge, in turn we can implement higher order thinking skills and good questioning strategies.

Much autonomy is given to the students for them to be independent, reflective, independent thinkers, self managers and to have more enquiring minds. Students then wish to research further at home, this then leads to a discussion the following session which in turn improves functional skills.

The buddy system raises awareness in equality and diversity as students connect with students at a different level, trying to understand and appreciate E&D, whether it be from a learning difficulty angle or academic level. This in turn improves the emotional well being of the student in feeling accepted at a different level.

Learning buddies work, helping students self esteem and social skills too. It helps their social and emotional learning as well as academic success. Not only does it broaden their mind but to stretch and challenge them inorder to encourage them to study and research further. Often increasing their awareness in equality and diversity.
